When I look out across the water,

at times I am caught with the sudden awareness

that I may not be beyond these moments,

and may not taste again between my lips

any spaghetti alle vongole

 

and when I’m finding my way into the morning

and realise, I might not live

till your mouth finds my neck

to kiss, as your arms claim me closer to you

 

and when I feel I may no longer be half surrounded

by a strip of pink, where

the darkening sky meets its land

 

Or when I doubt I could forever be

moved by the rhythm musicians are playing to

or by tears of joy rising in me as I hear a woman’s voice singing

 

then I pause, and from that infinite space

breathe in, and breathe out

and there is nothing but this moment.
